The ADANAC Incident Management System

Adanac has developed an Incident Management System (IMS) to help prepare for and respond to all kinds of workplace incidents. The IMS is a company wide set of plans, procedures and actions for minimizing the damage that can result from incidents in the workplace.

The IMS is built on four main principles:

Preparing for the likelihood that incidents will occur.
Minimizing risks to people and property.
Responding quickly and effectively when incidents occur.
Stabilizing the situation and returning to normal activity as quickly as possible.

Through the IMS, ADANAC's goal is to ensure that before an incident takes place, all procedures are clearly 'mapped out' to ensure your safety. To protect the public, and to minimize damage to property and the environment.

The IMS consists of two main components:

The Incident Management Plan contains instructions and guidelines for personnel to follow before, during and after an incident takes place. Each site has its own IMP, which is customized to suit the unique requirements of it's business operations, workforce and physical environment.
The Incident Command System establishes the structure of command ( who's in charge? ), the division of responsibilities ( who does what? ) and the deployment of resources ( how will people, equipment and services be used? ) so sites can respond to incidents in a safe, orderly and efficient manner.
The IMS is more than just a company policy. It's a full commitment to the safety and well being of your employees, and it's built on the foundations of well-trained personnel, effective communication nad continuous practice. It organizes staff when unexpected events occur and allows them to work hand-in-hand with emergency responding agencies like the fire department or police when necessary.

Why is This Important to Me?

Think of it this way: If someone issued a bomb threat as you were reading this, wouldn't you want an IMS to be in place? Or if you were caught in an industrial accident, wouldn't you want to know that your co-workers could get help as soon as possible?

An Incident is any unforeseen occurrence -
Large or small that disrupts normal operations in the workplace and requires an emergency response. Incidents are serious matters; they can lead to injuries, deaths, business shutdown, environmental damage or damage to the company's reputation.

Examples:

Minor injuries on the job

Fires or explosions
Natural disasters such as floods hurricanes, tornadoes, storms or earthquakes.
Industrial accidents

What to do when an accident occurs ?

1. Immediately notify your supervisor receptionist or security dispatcher.

2. When making the call, state the following.
- You are reporting an accident
- Your name
- Your current phone number
- The location of the incident
- The time of the incident
- The number of employees injured or at risk, if any.
- The nature of the incident (what happened?)
- Actions taken to this point

3. Follow the instructions of your Incident Command Team

What Happens Next ?

1. The security dispatcher notifies the Incident Commander
2. The Incident Commander activates the Incident Command System
3. The Incident Command Team establishes the action plan and instructs everyone involved on what to do next, whether it means shutting down operations, evacuating the facility, obtaining medical assistance, or returning safety to your workstation.

What does the Incident Command Team do ?

The Incident Command Team is a group of your co-workers who have been designated to lead you through the safe return to normal operations when an incident occurs.

The Incident Command Team is trained to respond to all kinds of incidents, from an injury on the shop floor to an area-wide disaster. The team is flexible; while it's members are drawn from a variety of functions, their duties and responsibilities shift entirely to Incident Command once called upon in an emergency. In all cases, they know how to manage and respond to workplace incidents when they occur.

By following the instructions of your Incident Command Team, you can help stabilize an incident quickly and calmly, with minimal risk to your personal safety and minimal disruption to your job.
